Bush claims Scooter Libby was “just joking”…

(CBN) - In an attempt by President Bush to explain the motives behind his decision to exercise his executive power in order to pardon Lewis “Scooter” Libby from jailtime, Bush told the press, “the whole thing was just a big misunderstanding.” He continued by asserting that when Mr. Libby originally leaked the name of the CIA operative Valeria Plame, he was “just kidding,” essentially arguing that the whole affair was a big practical joke.

But Democrats weren’t laughing. Shortly after Bush’s statement, the Democratic National Committee attacked the President for minimizing the seriousness of the situation.

“People went to jail for this,” said Benjamin Felling, a spokesman for the DNC. “People’s lives were ruined. And he writes it off as a joke?”

Bush tried passing off the controversy as a “joke”

Indeed, many were confused by Bush’s assessment that the entire Scooter Libby affair was a big misunderstanding. But Bush remained adamant at the press conference, saying “It’s not a big deal, the joke’s over, everybody can go home. Libby wasn’t being serious, so why punish him? Let’s get real.”

However, for many, “getting real” means revoking the pardon and sending Libby to jail where he can serve some “real” time.

Bush later apologized for belittling the seriousness of the situation after meeting with his advisors.
