Prison is “home” for black people, says Mitt Romney

(PNC) - Mitt Romney is no stranger to controversy. Indeed, the Republican presidential candidate has often faced staunch criticism for his more radically held conservative views on topics such as same-sex marriage and abortion. But in a recent statement made to the press, Mitt has dug himself into yet a deeper hole upon claiming that prison can be a “second home” for African Americans.

The statement was made in a response to a question that addressed the problem of America’s overpopulated and underfunded prison system. He began the follow-up by expressing his belief in revamping and modernizing many of the prisons to make them as comfortable as possible. Amongst the ideas mentioned, he discussed his plan to install more televisions, provide more exercise equipment and even allow restricted wireless internet service.

When questioned about the motivations behind making prisons more appealing, Romney responded saying, “By making the prison system a more accomodating place, black criminals wouldn’t be so averse to getting off the streets and getting into jail. It could become a kind of second home, thereby keeping our neighborhoods safer and cleaner. Wouldn’t that be nice?”

As evidenced by his demeanor, Mr. Romney immediately understood the implications of his statement and then attempted to restate his position. But not surprisingly, the remainder of his speech was interrupted by staunch protest from the audience.

For many voters, the offensive remark illustrates the potential dangers of supporting a candidate that holds such radical political stances. And though a spokesman for Mitt Romney’s campaign asserts that the comment was misunderstood and unintentional, it is not the first time Mitt has “accidentally” expressed racist views.

In January, when speaking about his family’s history, he was quoted saying “Us Romney’s are as fully American as the good Lord made possible. I thank God every day for making me American… and giving me this beautiful, milky-white face of mine… unlike some candidates.” It is assumed that he was referring to Barack Obama.

Mr. Romney has sinced apologized for the statements and assures the public that he holds no racist views.
