(TNN) - According to a leaked report from the technical director of the massively popular website Digg.com, the company has been struggling with maintaining security after being compromised by a team of hackers over a month ago.

Digg.com - famous for its democratic take on ranking article popularity - is widely considered one of the most important online websites for many involved in the blogging community. But according to the report, hackers have been tampering with the ranking system and making it easier for certain articles to make it to the Top 10 spot.

The compromise of Digg.com’s security provides a compelling explanation for all of the recent complaints many users have been expressing, particularly in regard to the quality of articles being made popular. In addition, it is believed that this also explains the rise to prominence of several hoax articles that have plagued Digg.

As to the culprits, a Digg spokesman released a statement saying, “We believe that the breach in security unfortunately came from someone within the company and are investigating the matter further. We take matters of security very seriously and would not want to compromise the integrity of our site.”

No suspects have yet to be named.
