Ron Paul’s early years as an openly gay youth…

(WNSR) - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has long been the source of much talk in the media and has more recently become somewhat of an internet celebrity. Additionally, he has arguably become the spokesman for a certain brand of today’s political youth while simultaneously being heralded as a man of innovation and reform. Ron Paul has been described as a breath of fresh air in a very stale political climate.

But while his politics are somewhat famous, there remain large aspects of his personal life that are generally unknown to the public - amongst the largest secrets in Ron Paul’s personal past is his experience as an openly gay teenager for several years while attending high school in Pennsylvania.

The high school was located in Dormont, PA - just a few miles from where he was born and raised. While in high school, Ron excelled in his academics, joined several varsity sports teams and even served as president of his student council.  However, his first experience with homosexuality occurred while on his track and field team with another athlete and fellow student named Jakob Meyers.

Jakob had been an openly gay teenager and the two students became close friends. According to early interview sessions, it was with Jakob that Ron first expressed his feelings of confused sexuality, eventually leading to several sexual encounters between the two boys. Jakob also helped Ron come out to his parents later that year.

Ron then spent several years as am openly gay student in his school and engaged in at least 2 other sexual encounters with male students. But after enrolling in college, his homosexual feelings were said to have subsided, eventually resulting in him meeting his future wife, Carol Wells.

Though his experience as a gay man were brief and isolated, many political commentators believe that it is this kind of experience that has made Ron Paul the open-minded and tolerant Libertarian that he is today. Others, however, have criticized Paul for failing to address his early sexuality and even attempting to conceal it, arguing that he treats it as something he is “ashamed of.”

When confronted with this criticism in a July 2007 interview with CNN, Mr Paul said “I feel that there are personal issues that are relevant to discuss, and personal details that are, frankly, nobody’s business. I believe this falls into the latter category.”

But as the election draws nearer, it remains doubtful that he’ll be able to sidestep this issue much longer as his competing candidates search for campaign smear fodder.

  1. There’s a fine line between “fake news story” and libel. This article seems to cross that line.
